People can now register their interest in the new water softener scrappage scheme.
If you currently have a working G-rated water softener, you could be one of 500 people to receive a $400 discount off the cost of upgrading to a new, more efficient A rated water softener.
If your softener or filter is more than 15 years old, it’s likely that it will be G rated. If you qualify for a replacement, you should arrange for a quote from a qualified installer. Then, contact the Water Saving Trust with your details and your quote. They are working with Home Water Experts (formerly Water Softener Advisor) in order to find a better approach to water softening in our city. If everything is in order, you will get a voucher for $400 which will be refunded once the work has been completed and Water Saving Trust have received the invoice for the work and the voucher.

SME’s can access funding to help grow their business and combat climate change as a result of two recently launched initiatives:
1. Wanted-SME’s with BIG ideas on climate change
Shell Springboard is open for a 4th round of applications from small businesses who have a product or service that reduces greenhouse gas emissions. This could be a huge opportunity if you have a great idea and a solid business plan behind it, the funding ranges from £20,000 to £40,000.
Applicants must fulfil the following criteria:
-The product or service must reduce greenhouse gas emissions, be innovative and commercially viable.
-You need to have been in business for at least 3 months as a sole trader or a company employing fewer than 250 people.

2. Carbon Trust double energy efficiency funds for SMEs
Small businesses feeling the pinch are being offered interest free loans of up to £200,000 to improve their energy efficiency, the overall pot available for loans now stands at £31million.
The increase in funding will make it easier for small businesses to invest in the capital required to improve energy efficiency, reduce costs and reduce their carbon emissions. The loans are unsecured , interest free and repayable over four years.

Environment Leeds are marking United Nations World Environment Day on 5th June by encouraging people, organisations and businesses in Leeds to “Kick the Carbon Habit” and make a pledge to reduce their own carbon emissions. You can take your personal pledge on this website today. If you take the pledge at a Leeds Library from 5th June to 20th June 2008 you will be entered into a prize draw to win a Carbon Reduction Kit.
The draw prize has been funded by Europe Direct Leeds and will enable the winner to take positive action to fulfil their pledge to reduce their own CO2 emissions. Libraries will also have information available on how to travel lightly by leaving your car at home.
The council is working to reduce the travel impact of its own staff and is holding it’s own Sustainable Travel Options roadshow in the Carriageworks theatre. Staff are being encouraged to drop in to the theatre where they will be given advice and information on walking, cycling, public transport, carsharing, Leeds car club, WhizzGo, and Flexible Working Options and the associated benefits, for the journey to work, and business travel.
Environment Leeds newsletter which is available from libraries and other public council buildings and will be distributed on 5th June also carries sustainable travel information for the general public.

Successful business is all about eliminating waste, so a new handbook is set to help Leeds businesses save money reducing theirs.
All businesses create waste, ranging from office paper to off-cuts of wood; plastic wrappers to unwanted food.
The Business Waste Handbook, created by Leeds City Council, provides specific information and tips for offices and catering, construction, retail, leisure and tourism, printing and manufacturing businesses.
The handbook gives advice on reducing the amount of waste created, reusing materials and recycling as much as possible, as well as waste audits and a guide to legislation. There is also a list of organisations which can provide further information, guidance and funding to help businesses make changes.
Copies have also been distributed to food businesses in Leeds and a pdf version can be downloaded from www.leeds.gov.uk/recycling on the commercial waste page.
Councillor James Monaghan, Leeds City Council’s executive board member for environmental services, said: “Leeds City Council is committed to making Leeds a greener city and we want to prove to businesses that you can cut down on waste being sent to landfill and save money – they need practical advice and that’s exactly what we’re giving them.
“Whether it’s help with recycling or just where to find more information, it’s all in the handbook.”
Many Leeds businesses have already started to make positive changes to their waste management. Shopping arcade The Light already recycles 90% of materials produced by its stores. However they want to go even further.
Kevin Bilclough, manager of waste at The Light, said: “We will be using the Business Waste Handbook to find information about recycling our food waste and minimising the waste created on site.”
Leeds City Council is also helping other councils in the Yorkshire and Humber region to help their local businesses too. They have received funding through the Yorkshire and Humber Improvement Efficiency Partnership to produce customised versions of the business waste handbook for the 21 local authorities in the region to use.
