Young cyclists from five schools will be making their way on a challenging ride through Otley during Bike Week 2010.
Pupils from Otley All Saints, The Whartons, Ashfield, Westgate, and St Josephs are taking part in the ‘five schools, five challenges’ on Thursday June 24. They'll be led by trainers from Leeds City Council road safety promotion unit and the TravelWise team, and members of the local Neighbourhood Policing team, on a ride from Otley through Leathley up to Almscliffe Crag.
At the half way point at Almscliffe Crag there will be five fun activities with prizes for each activity. Activities will include a cycle obstacle race and a five aside penalty shoot out and more.
Generous support has been received from West Yorkshire Police, who have provided competition prizes, and from Chevin Cycles who have given every participant a voucher to spend in their shop and have offered the star prize of a bike for one lucky school.
Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council's executive board member for development and regeneration said: “This event provides a great opportunity for children to put into practice their cycling skills and improve on their knowledge of road safety in a practical real road circumstance.
“I wish all the teams best of luck in the challenge and I hope they all enjoy their day.”
This year's National Bike Week theme is ‘everyday cycling for everyone’ and challenges people to use cycling as the most convenient, and a more environmentally friendly, way to get around. If you'd like to take part in a cycle ride or event, please check the website for the latest event listings.
