Leeds partner city Lille hosted a three day Fairtrade conference, on
the weekend of Saturday 8th May 2010, with the aim of raising consumer
awareness and encourage responsible purchasing.
A number of workshops and seminars
took place, where specialist speakers from across the world presented on a
range of Fairtrade topics. The impact of the financial crisis on ethical
trading, as well as the positive influence of Fairtrade on the economy,
education and infrastructure in developing countries, were some of the topics
covered.
Ian Adderley, Chair of the Leeds
Fairtrade Steering Group, delivered a presentation about Fairtrade in the City
of Leeds, the Fairtrade movement in the UK, the role of elected officials as
well as international co-operation and solidarity.
Representing Leeds Procurement
Initiatives and Projects Team, Catherine Farrell spoke at a workshop on the methods
Leeds is using to incorporate Fairtrade into council contracts. A
supplier also presented to give his perspective on working with council buyers
and meeting contract requirements.
Catherine commented “It was interesting to hear how people are
trying to use Fairtrade to develop their local communities. It is reassuring to
see the work we do behind the scenes in procurement has positive and real
impacts on people in developing countries”.
An exhibition area showcased Fairtrade local produce, clothing and
other products plus there were demonstrations, fashion shows and tasting sessions
held to engage and encourage people to get involved with Fairtrade. The conference was very well
attended, with delegates from Palestine, Morocco, Leeds and beyond!
