The Leeds-Lille partnership was established in 1968 when a twinning charter was signed, however there already existed a link between the two universities before the war.
Since then the number and nature of the links have multiplied and there is continual contact between academics, young people and businesses in both countries. The two cities have worked together on various youth and education projects, mostly European funded, to address common challenges faced by modern European cities.
Leeds has established good relations between British Telecom and PTT (Post, Telegraphs et Telephones) in France and trade missions between the two cities have explored the potential for business collaboration.
Since 1987, Age Concern Leeds has a partnership with a similar charity in Lille called Carrami. Cultural links have been maintained through many projects such as those commemorating their joint history within Europe.
