European funding brings world’s first virtual city guide to Leeds

Leeds has launched the world’s first fully interactive city guide this year known as ‘LeedsCast’. Visitors and residents in Leeds can download this virtual guide directly to their mobile phones via Bluetooth.

LeedsCast is the result of a European funded project which sought to share good practice and develop innovative approaches to increase the attractiveness of European cities by fostering the development of their identity, accessibility and image. Project partners included the cities of Bristol and Southampton in the UK, Bruges (Belgium), Hagen, Kaiserslautern and Leverkusen (Germany) as well as Erasmus University Rotterdam (Netherlands).

As one of the partners, Leeds benefited from an EU grant of over £200,000 to support the delivery of local pilot projects, including funding of almost £90,000 to help Leeds develop the LeedsCast guide, using new technology. The guide is recognised as the first of its kind in the world.

LeedsCast offers free access to useful information including restaurant, bar and hotel details, news headlines and contact numbers for public transport and taxi firms at the touch of a button. It also provides access to a range of offers from city centre outlets, events and businesses, and even supplies walking directions for visitors to the city centre.

The guide uses information from www.leedsliveitloveit.com, the city’s official website for business, leisure and education and can be downloaded at a number of areas around the city centre, including Millennium Square, the bus and train stations, Leeds Visitor Centre and Leeds Central Library.

At the launch of LeedsCast held in the recently refurbished Tiled Hall café in the Art Gallery, Leeds City Centre Manager, Cath Follin, said: “This puts a whole host of information at the touch of a button.  You can take the information with you to access whenever and wherever you might need it.  This innovative approach would not have been possible without the shared learning and insights brought to the project by our European partners”.
