Five Leeds facilities have been selected as potential training venues for athletes in the build up to the London 2012 Games.
The John Charles Centre for Sport, Rothwell Leisure Centre, Headingley Carnegie Stadium, University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University all feature in a national list of over 600 venues that will form a Pre-Games Training Camp Guide. The Guide will be given to international Olympic teams during the Beijing Games.
Councillor John Procter, chair of the Leeds Cultural Partnership, said: "We are delighted that our sports facilities are being considered in the next stage of potential training venues ahead of the Olympics. We now have some of the finest sports facilities in the region here in Leeds, and the fact that they are thought worthy of hosting some of the finest sportspeople in the world is something as a city we should be very proud of.
"It would be fantastic to be able to attract a range of countries and sports teams to Leeds as they build up to 2012, which is sure to be a historic event for the whole nation to enjoy and support."
Charles Allen, chair of LOCOG’s Nations and Regions Group, attended a recent meeting of the Leeds Cultural Partnership. At the meeting Peter Smith, Leeds project manager for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, gave an overview of the work that has taken place in Leeds since the announcement that London would be the host of the 2012 Games.
This spring will also see the launch of a Leeds DVD and brochure, which will be distributed to International Olympic teams to highlight what Leeds can offer to Olympic and Paralympic teams for their training for London 2012.
