Welcome to the twenty-eighth edition of Last Friday, the regular update of the Yorkshire Committee for the 2012 Games. There has been a lot of recent changes with the Committee moving home and the appointment of new a new Manager and Administrator. Yorkshire Gold, the strategy for capitalising on the opportunities presented by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, is also undergoing a thorough redrafting so as best reflect the region’s priorities between Beijing and 2012. Along with the new version of Yorkshire Gold, there will also be a new website and accompanying stakeholder engagement tool.
Yorkshire Committee for the 2012 Games welcomes new Manager
Kate Auld has been appointed to the post of Manager of the Yorkshire Committee for the 2012 Games whilst Lisa Rushforth has been appointed as the Administrator of the Committee's Secretariat. Kate says "It’s an exciting time for Yorkshire Gold and a key part of the role will be to gather up to date information on how Yorkshire’s seizing the opportunities that the 2012 Games offer and showcasing it to the wider world. It’s a big team effort and I’m looking forward to working with public and private organisations to use 2012 to help galvanise Yorkshire’s economic, sporting and social potential."
Kate’s background is PR and communications and she has worked with organisations spanning sport, the arts, tourism and business. Prior to working in PR Kate worked for BBC Radio 1 and did a stint in the newsroom at BBC Radio Leeds. Lisa joins the team from Spawforths town planning consultancy where she was PA to the Deputy Chairman.

On a roll: Keeping the Olympic dream alive
The Great Britain team returned from the Beijing Olympics covered in glory, not to mention weighed down with medals: 47 in all. The accolades didn't stop there, with triple gold medal-winning sprint cyclist Chris Hoy going on to pick up the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award. Pete Lindsay is a sport psychologist with the British Olympic boxing and judo teams, and the lead psychologist for the Yorkshire branch of the English Institute of Sport.

Sheffield gets spiked as FIVB Volleyball Championships come to EIS
The FIVB Volleyball World Championships first round take place at Sheffield's English Institute of Sport on January the 2nd, 3rd and 4th and to celebrate Yorkshire Events have taken volleyball to the people of Sheffield with this short film. The soundtrack for the film is provided by unsigned, up-and-coming Sheffield band, The True Gentlemen, with their storming tune Toxic Reservoir. Sheffield has become the home of British volleyball with the EISS housing the British indoor squads, while the venue is the number one choice for many national teams around the world to stage their training camps in this country.

Doing Business in Serbia - Collaboration and Business Development Opportunities
As a follow-on to the hosting of the Serbian Olympic training camp, Leeds hosted a Doing Business in Serbia - Collaboration and Business Development Opportunities seminar on 15th January 2009 at the Civic Hall. In addition to the representatives from over 50 local businesses, the event was attended by the Serbian Ambassador to the UK and Serbian business representatives from Belgrade and London.

Yorkshire Olympic sailing hero tops golden year with MBE
OLYMPIC sailing hero Paul Goodison has topped off his fantastic year with an MBE just weeks after being named Yorkshire Sports Personality of the Year. The 31-year-old cruised into the history books after he took first place and a gold medal in the Laser class at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre at the Beijing Olympics last August and has since received several awards. But yesterday he chose to spend the afternoon shopping and visiting his 85-year-old grandmother Joyce Goodison, who lives in the Arbourthorne area of Sheffield.

Jonny takes a further step to 2012
YOUNG Horsforth athlete Jonny Brownlee has taken a further step on the road towards the 2012 London Olympics. The Bingley Harrier won the mens individual triathlon at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney. He is hoping to emulate his elder brother Alistair, who finished 12th in the Olympic triathlon in Beijing, by gaining selection for the next Olympic Games. Former Bradford Grammar School student Jonny defied the heat to beat off ten other competitors who were in with a chance at the end of the cycling leg, and triumphed in 52min 02sec.

Yorkshire university chief resigns as vice-chancellor
The head of one of Yorkshire's leading universities, Professor Simon Lee, has resigned, it is understood. Prof Lee, vice-chancellor of Leeds Metropolitan University, tendered his resignation before Christmas to the university's chairman of governors, Ninian Watt, and it was accepted. Today, in a statement, Chair of the Board of Governors, Ninian Watt said: "Professor Simon Lee, our Vice-Chancellor, has informed me that he will be leaving us this summer.

Town puts on show for director of 2012 London Olympics
A SENIOR figure from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport paid a visit to North East Lincolnshire to see sporting schemes in the area. Nicola Roche, director of staging for the London 2012 Olympics, was impressed by existing projects and vowed to help the council continue improving its sporting provision. Ms Roche, whose role also includes overseeing sporting projects in the Yorkshire and Humber Region, was on her first visit to North East Lincolnshire.
